DOMINICAN REPUBLIC + AFRICAN DIASPORA!

African Diaspora + slave trade + Dominican Republic
Tainos and Africans were attacked by Spanish and made slaves. The spanish did not discovered america. When they got there they found taninos and started conquering them. They took them back in forth in boats, and made them slave. Since the spanish saw there was no way the tainos couldn’t  defend themself they started thinking as they are their leaders and took over the whole country. ( the trail of columbus). The spanish continued to take over larger cities, and also wanted to protect them from the french corsairs. Slavery then started to become a big part of the dominican republic, people started selling and buying slaves from africa. In 1562 corsair john hawkins was the main source of getting slaves, he would send hundreds of slaves in ships to puerto plata. Buying slaves then became a big thing, they were all around santo domingo(D.R) and in Haiti, people imported slaves from D.R to Haiti

Dominican R. + resistance

Many Africans in the Dominican republic resisted from working on the plantation, they resisted in many ways like by practicing  their culture, escape, and pretend to be someone else. In 1522 they all started escaping to the mountains and created the first independent African maroon community in the Americas. They would also do a dance call "merengue" to feel free (author's last name).

how does the African dispora affect         Dominican Republic today ?

it affects the dominican republic because they do do things that the africans did. They also use instruments and food that the africans created when they were slaves. Also people in DR live upon houses that african slaves created, and mayny buildings in santo domingo that are called (UNESCO). Not every body in santo dominigo knows that they live in a place that was invated by african culture and that they are flowing some of their culture. They also are used to dancing "merengue'' which was made by africans when they were slaves, they would dance this to feel free. they also celebrated carnival which was brought from africa shared with brazil, and spred to DR.
